Apple MacOS X Laptop Setup
Before you turn on your laptop
- Plug the podium's PC/Video cable into the video output (VGA) of your laptop. Many Apple iBooks and Powerbooks require a VGA adaptor (supplied with your computer, or available for purchase through the Apple Store if you misplaced yours. Apple has an article to identify which adapter to use with your Macintosh.)
- Press "Laptop PC" on the podium touch screen (if the screen is blank or shows a Rutgers Logo, touch it anywhere to bring up the menu). If you are in a room with a TV/Data Monitor but no enhanced podium, you may need the remote control to switch the TV to laptop display. Call 445-3612 if you do not see the remote.
- Connect your ethernet cable to the "Data" jack on the podium and the ethernet jack on your computer. You must bring your own ethernet cable, there are none in the podiums. Please note that there are two nearly identical jacks on the podium labeled"Voice" and "Data". Do not plug your ethernet cable into the "Voice" jack!
- Turn on the laptop
Display Settings
- Click Apple menu.

- Click "System Preferences...".
- Click on the "Displays" icon. Once the panel appears, click the "Arrangement" tab.
- If you do not see an "Arrange" tab, make sure the VGA cable is firmly attached
to your laptop, put your computer to sleep (closing the lid usually does it),
wait 5 seconds and wake your computer up (open the lid and press any key).
- Often the Macintosh displays different images on the laptop and the projector,
as the above picture indicates. Check the "Mirror Displays" box
to show the same image on both the projector and the laptop. The graphic should
show the two monitors overlapping.
- Click the "Display" tab, and set the resolution and colors to suit your
needs (smaller resolutions make the text and images appear larger on the projector
and laptop screen). If you have trouble getting an image on the projector,
try a resolution of 800x600. Note that you may have two "Display" tabs, one for the internal laptop "LCD" display, and one for the projector.
Network Settings
- Open your System Preferences by clicking the blue "Apple" menu and choosing
"System Preferences"
- Click the "Network" icon.
- Choose "Show Built-in Ethernet". If you see numbers in the boxes, use the "Location" menu to create a new location named "Classroom". This will allow you to switch back and forth between the different settings depending on where you are using your laptop by choosing the location from your blue "Apple" menu.
- Choose "Configure using DHCP". All the other boxes should be blank. If you
are unable to make any changes, click the small "lock" icon in the lower left-hand
corner to unlock the settings.
- Click "Apply Now", or close the System Preferences and save your changes if asked.
- You may need to quit and restart any web browsers or software that uses the network connection before it sees the new settings. If you find that you need to restart the laptop after changing the network settings, make sure you follow the proper power up order above.
- In many cases, there will be no need to change your network settings again. If you do need to use different settings, click on the blue "Apple" menu, then on "Location" to switch between the "Classroom" settings and the original "Automatic" settings.
